Discovery

As part of Chili’s 40th anniversary celebration, the team at Smith Design—led by Creative Director Mark Bellncula—set out to tell “40 Years in 40 Stories”, a documentary-style video honoring the brand’s legacy.

One segment needed to spotlight Chili’s iconic Big Mouth Burger, a top-selling menu item for nearly a decade. To capture its pop culture impact, Invisible Element was brought on to create a short animated tribute that didn’t take itself too seriously.

Process

Invisible Element handled art direction, illustration, and animation—transforming the Big Mouth Burger into an anthropomorphic, motorcycle-riding character with plenty of swagger.

Designed in Illustrator and Photoshop, the visuals leaned into expressive shapes and exaggerated motion, then brought to life in After Effects with energetic pacing and playful transitions.

Solution

The final segment blended humor, nostalgia, and character design to celebrate one of Chili’s most iconic menu items. As part of the broader 40th anniversary feature, it offered a fun, unexpected moment that perfectly captured the brand’s bold personality.
